This page will be regularly maintained to keep our donors and those seeking food assistance up to date on the latest regarding the COVID-19 crisis in the Durham community.
PORCH-Durham has ONE staff member who covers all aspects of running programs and the organization as a whole. Email responses may take up to 72 hours- please review our webpages for information before sending a message, as you will likely find the info you are seeking published here!
PORCH-Durham is committed to operating under the safest possible setting. We require volunteers to wear masks and offer ONLY no-contact volunteer opportunities. We have one staff member who works remotely whenever possible, as advised by the NC Department of Public Health.
We have completed Count On Me NC training and certification to ensure best practices for operation during this pandemic.
Emergency Food Support
PORCH-Durham is not a pantry and we do not have the capacity to support individuals. Our food and gift card programs support schools and local nonprofit organizations who serve children and families in need. For pantries and other resources for individuals we primarily recommend Durham Food Pantry and Parktown Food Hub, and if you have a child or children you are eligible to pick up food 5 days a week at Durham Public Schools Feeding Sites, located throughout the county. End Hunger Durham’s website also has a frequently updated list of other pantries.
Volunteer to Deliver Food!
PORCH-Durham and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle are working to provide foods to children across Durham County, through Durham Public Schools, DPS Learning Centers, EAT NC, mobile markets, and community food distributions and pantries.
We have two delivery sign ups: every other Friday Backpack Buddies are delivered to various DPS elementary schools. Click here for details and sign up: Volunteer for Backpack Buddies Deliveries
Every third Wednesday of the month pantry stock is delivered to DPS schools and other community organizations. Click here for details and to sign up.
Sign Up To Support Our Ongoing Food Collection!
Drop off food two Mondays per month, 9am-11am! View the calendar here. To eliminate the extra contact with the food we distribute, PORCH-Durham will not be holding our regular large collections. We are asking individuals and neighborhoods to donate directly to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s Child Food Hub at 2436 S Miami Blvd, where we share some warehouse space.
We will not consider resuming regular collections until the Safer At Home orders are lifted. Please visit our Sign-Up Here and register your Neighborhood (or individual!) to drop off.
Monetary donations are also requested! You may donate here or mail a check to PORCH-Durham at PO Box 3203 Durham, NC 27715. We are purchasing grocery gift cards for non-food agencies who serve children in need, allowing families to shop for themselves during this uncertain time. Current supported groups include Durham Public Schools, Durham Children’s Initiative, LEAP, Parktown Food Hub, and the food pantry in McDouagld Terrace. To date we have supplied over $158,000 in grocery gift cards. Please help us continue this support by donating today.
- Following us on Facebook and signing up for our newsletter are the best two ways to keep up with the ongoing needs and updates.
