Don’t miss “Food Fighters“, a documentary by Ben Saalfield, a wonderful peek into our programs and other food security programs in Durham County.
After hearing about the success of PORCH in Chapel Hill (People Offering Relief for Chapel Hill-Carrboro Homes), Durham community members Lesli Garrison, Chasie Harris, and Jen Meldrum, decided to join forces and start PORCH-Durham.
In January of 2011, we began our monthly PORCH-Durham food collections in support of the BackPack Buddies program sponsored by the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle (IFFS).
In 2013, the IFFS introduced the School Pantry Program (using food collected from PORCH-Durham that was not suitable for backpack buddies), that currently serves up to 250 students every week in 3 elementary, 4 middle, 4 high schools, Durham Technical Community College, Durham Teen Center, Healthy Families of Durham, and the Durham Literacy Center.
In February 2012, PORCH-Durham received federal tax-exempt status under section 501 (c) 3 and Public Charity Status.
Our mission is to provide supplemental food to children and families facing hunger in Durham County.
How PORCH-Durham Collections Work
PORCH is built around the very simple idea of a neighborhood food drive. Here’s how it works, in three easy steps:
- Once a month, on a designated day, residents place a food donation of individual sized-portions on their front porch.
- A volunteer neighborhood coordinator goes porch to porch and picks up the food donations.
- The donated food is transported by car to The Child Food Hub where it is sorted, packed, and readied for delivery by volunteers. Inter-Faith Food Shuttle schedules these shifts.
Every weekend of the school year, weekend backpacks of food are packaged and leave the IFFS’ Durham location and go home to those elementary school children who are food insecure. Weekend backpacks include the following food items to get the children through the weekend: 2 proteins (tuna, meat, beans), 2 veggies, 1 fruit, 2 milk, 2 juice, 2 noodles, 2 breakfast items, and 2 snacks. Through food donations and monetary support, PORCH-Durham currently supplies the food for backpacks at 7 elementary schools and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Durham.
School Pantry Program
The School Pantry program currently serves The Whitted School, 3 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 4 high schools. The School Pantry program makes two deliveries a month. On the 1st Wednesday of each month, 4-6 boxes of non-perishables are delivered and on the 3rd Wednesday, 2 boxes of fresh fruit are delivered. About 250 students are served through the School and Community Pantry programs every week.
Community Pantry Support
PORCH-Durham also provides food for children at Healthy Families Durham, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Durham and the Durham Teen Center, as well as students at the Durham Literacy Council and Durham Technical Community College.
Durham County – Summer Camp for At-Risk Students
During the summer, PORCH-Durham provides bags of food and fresh fruit to over 300 children enrolled in summer camp throughout Durham County.
