Welcome to PORCH Durham! In January of 2011, we began our monthly PORCH-Durham food collections in support of the BackPack Buddies program sponsored by the InterFaith Food Shuttle.
This program currently provides 538 backpacks with food for the weekend to those children most in need within 6 Durham Public Schools as well as the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Durham. In 2013 the IFFS introduced the School Pantry Program (using food collected from PORCH-Durham that was not suitable for backpack buddies), that currently serves up to 2,000 students in 3 elementary, 4 middle, 4 high schools, Durham Technical Community College, Durham Teen Center, Healthy Families of Durham, and the Durham Literacy Center. After hearing about the success of PORCH in Chapel Hill (People Offering Relief for Chapel Hill-Carrboro Homes), Lesli Garrison, Chasie Harris, and Jen Meldrum, three women in Durham decided to join forces and start PORCH-Durham. In February 2012, PORCH-Durham received federal tax-exempt status under section 501 (c) 3 and Public Charity Status. Our mission is to support the BackPack Buddies and School Pantry programs in Durham, North Carolina.
How PORCH WorksPORCH is built around the very simple idea of a neighborhood food drive. Here's how it works, in three easy steps:
- Once a month, on a designated day, residents place a food donation of individual sized-portions on their front porch.
- A volunteer neighborhood coordinator goes porch to porch and picks up the food donations.
- The donated food is transported by car to a central location where it is sorted, packed into backpacks, and then delivered to 18 participating schools, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Durham, the Durham Teen Center, Health Families Durham, and the Durham Literacy Center.
PORCH ProgramsWe support the following PORCH programs:
BackPack BuddiesEvery weekend of the school year, weekend backpacks of food are packaged and leave the IFFS' Durham location and go home to those elementary school children who are food insecure. Weekend backpacks include the following food items to get the children through the weekend: 2 proteins (tuna, meat, beans), 2 veggies, 1 fruit, 3 milk, 2 juice, 2 noodles, 2 breakfast items, and 2 snacks. Through food donations and monetary support, PORCH-Durham currently supplies the food for backpacks at 6 elementary schools and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Durham.
School Pantry ProgramThe School Pantry program currently serves 3 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 4 high schools. The School Pantry program makes two deliveries a month. On the 1st Wednesday of each month, 4-6 boxes of non-perishables are delivered and on the 3rd Wednesday, 2 boxes of fresh fruit are delivered. About 2,000 students are served through the School and Community Pantry programs.
Community Pantry SupportPORCH-Durham also provides food for children at Healthy Families Durham, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Durham and the Durham Teen Center, as well as students at the Durham Literacy Council and Durham Technical Community College.
Durham County - Summer Camp for At-Risk StudentsDuring the summer, PORCH-Durham provides weekend backpacks of food and fresh fruit to over 300 food insecure students enrolled in summer camp throughout Durham County.

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle"Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is an innovative hunger-relief organization serving seven counties in and around the Triangle. We believe hunger IS fixable if the community works together to do two things: create sources of healthy food in every low-income neighborhood and grow opportunities for people to provide for themselves by learning job skills or growing their own food. From BackPack Buddies to nutrition education, mobile markets to culinary job training to urban agriculture training, we go directly to people in need and create what works to empower them. We feed. We teach. We grow…to create a hunger-free and healthy community." Read more about the history of IFFS from Co-Founder and Emeritus CEO Jill Staton Bullard.
